WEEE: Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment
What is WEEE?
UK government has imposed regulations and new measures to reduce people’s waste and their impact on the environment. The WEEE Directive (The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006, Statutory Instrument No. 3289) encourages people and companies to utilise environmentally friendly policies and minimise the amount of waste by separately collecting and recycling old electrical and electronic products.
The last few years, unwanted electrical goods are the fastest growing type of waste in the UK. Every year, million tonnes of electrical waste end up in landfill, causing water and soil contamination because of toxic materials, and the harmful substances they emit. This intensifies the pollution of the environment and puts in danger human health.
Fortunately, most of those electrical items can be recycled and reused. Recycling helps not only to save energy and natural resources but also to reduce the risks for the environment and people’s health.
The Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS)
Recycling of your electrical items cannot take place in our premises. However, we take proactive action for the protection of the environment and comply with the WEEE regulation by being an approved member of the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS).
At the end of the products’ life, you can recycle the electrical and electronic devices you have bought from us, at your local recycling centre. Visit the following website, enter your postcode and locate your nearest recycling bank. There you can deposit and recycle your old electrical goods fast and easy and free of charge.
All UK distributors and retailers are required to comply with the WEEE Directive and provide separate processing and safe disposal of waste equipment. Through our membership on the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS) we support financially and encourage the proactive action of the WEEE collection and recycling centres.
Look for this Symbol
Electrical equipment that was made after 2006 should include this symbol on its packaging or label. The symbol denotes that the product is made in accordance with WEEE regulation and is suitable for recycling. Collect those items separately for recycling and do not throw them out as regular household waste.
